"J’ai beaucoup voyagé, beaucoup trop !Et lorsque j’ai pris place, par une belle après-midi d’automne, dans la diligence qui relait le service Montélimar à Dieulefit, je m’attendais à trouver là-bas, là-bas, au milieu de ces belles montagnes que l’on voit de loin, en longeant les méandres du Jabron, une petite ville de quatre mille habitants, ressemblant aux villes de cette importance qui sont exilées au milieu des montagnes.
Je ne fus pas surpris de trouver, comme entrée de ville, une promenade magnifique, que plus d’une Préfecture pourrait envier à Dieulefit : et mon étonnement fut grand de voir l’électricité éclairer la ville.
Puis, me promenant dans les rues, j’admirai un hôtel de ville somptueux, je constatai l’existence d’une distribution d’eau, superbement agencée, je voyais les premières assises de magnifiques écoles ; j’apprenais aussi qu’un chemin de fer sur route devait relier bientôt Montélimar à Dieulefit".

I have travelled far, perhaps too far, and yet as I took my place, on a beautiful fall afternoon in the carriage leading from Montelimar to Dieulefit, I was waiting to find there, over there, nestled amongst the beautiful mountains which one can see from a distance, along the twists and turns of the Jabron, a small city, population 4000, resembling other cities of the same size exiled in the middle of the mountains. I was not surprised to find at the entrance to the city, a magnificent esplanade of which more than one capital could be envious, and to my great surprise, the city was lit by electricity !
Ten, while strolling along the streets, I was able to admire a luxurious city hall. I noted the existence of a public water fountain, beautifully furnished. I also saw the foundations destined to welcome a future school and learned that a train track would soon tie Montelimar to Dieulefit.
